Blender Praça do Comércio, Lisboa, Portugal

Concept

This was my first 3D project, before I had a hand in designing/developing any game. This was fully modelled and animated for my Bachelor's Degree Computer Graphics course.

Availability

It is currently not public, but as I was asked at the time if I could share the files with others I did, so if you have an interest in having the blender project available simply let me know.

The Project

For the project itself we were given routh designs and measurements of the "Praça do Comércio" in Portugal, and a simple explanation of basic blender tools. From that, work took place to ensure everything was as close as possible in a limited time frame.

The only asset which was not built and rather outsourced was the top part of the central statue of the plaza.

After the environment was built, I also created a simple keyframe animation showcasing a drone view and a stroll through the plaza (it was faster than human speed due to video time restrictions!). These end with the visualization of different spheres meant to showcase different types of surfaces and how they react to light.

Earlier Visual Iterations

Before changing the surfaces and lighting to be more realistic, the animation looked like this: Earlier version of the Keyframe Animation of "Praça do Comércio" in Blender

Development Process

For all of the modelling we used exclusively Blender modelling tools with no add-ons, and although some mistakes did remain in the final version, the core building structure is true to life, from the archways to the slanted roofs, the two side towers and the main entrance, albeit missing better meshes for a more realistic look.

Conclusion

It was a joy to work with 3D assets in general and it clearly gave me my first peek into how I could work with 3D environments from scratch. Although modelling hasn't been my main focus since completing this project, with it I gained the skills to model, use blender, understand different rendering pipelines, my first interactions with meshes, and how to make a scene in 3D space cohesive.
